Eggman after he dispatches a group of robots called the Hard-Boiled Heavies to retrieve a mysterious energy source known as the Phantom Ruby.
The trio’s chase leads them through altered versions of familiar zones from Sonic’s earlier adventures along with entirely new environments.
As they race to stop Eggman from exploiting the ruby’s power, each hero experiences a slightly different route through the world depending on the chosen character.
Gameplay retains the momentum-based design of the original Sonic the Hedgehog titles.
Players accelerate through side-scrolling stages filled with slopes, loops, springs, and hazards while collecting rings for protection.
The goal of each act is to reach the signpost or capsule at the end while avoiding enemies and environmental traps.
Sonic can perform his classic Spin Dash and gains a new “Drop Dash” move that launches him forward immediately upon landing.
Tails can fly short distances and swim, while Knuckles glides, climbs walls, and punches through barriers, granting access to alternate paths and secrets.
Each zone consists of two acts that combine speed sections with platforming challenges and culminate in boss encounters against Eggman or one of the Hard-Boiled Heavies.
Several stages revisit and expand on areas from earlier games such as Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant Zone, redesigned with new obstacles, alternate layouts, and updated visual effects.
Other zones are completely original, including Press Garden and Studiopolis, each introducing unique mechanics like bouncing newspapers, television projectors, or frozen terrain.
Collectible golden rings and power-ups remain central to survival.
When the player is hit, rings scatter and must be recovered before disappearing; losing all lives results in a game over.
Hidden within acts are giant rings that
About Nintendo Switch
Released in 2017, the Nintendo Switch became one of the best-selling consoles of all time thanks to its hybrid handheld/docked design. Its cartridge-based physical format (as opposed to discs) has made complete-in-box collecting popular again, with certain limited print runs and Nintendo-published exclusives already commanding a premium on the secondhand market just a few years after release.
Gamevaro tracks Sonic Mania for Nintendo Switch with separate market values for loose, complete-in-box (CIB) and factory-sealed copies, sourced from real eBay sales. Prices also vary by region — PAL, NTSC-U and NTSC-J releases of the same game often sell for different amounts due to print run sizes and regional collector demand.
Adding Sonic Mania to a Gamevaro collection takes seconds — search by title or scan the box barcode, and the app fills in cover art, release details and current pricing automatically. This NSW release dates back to 2017.

Market insights
Rarity & condition
Sonic Mania has a steady sales history on the tracked marketplaces, meaning enough copies circulate to establish a reliable market price.
Complete-in-box (CIB) copies typically command a premium over loose cartridges/discs because the original box and manual are more fragile and get discarded or damaged over time — fewer complete sets survive.
