At the same time a wedding invitation arrives from an ex the character broke up a year ago.
Through a short sequence at a party prior to the events of the game, the main character (male or female) is selected from the guests there as well as the love interest (male or female) to tailor the game to the player's preferred gender, race and sexual preference.
The game also opens with a sequence in the future where a contract killer who wants to leave the profession is confronted on the street.
The game starts in Dubtown, a city with shops, nightlife, working locations and many people to meet.
The environment can be explored freely and there are many choices to influence the events.
Money for instance can be stolen, earned through work, or risked through gambling or investing in sandwiches.
People often offer opportunities with ethical consequences.
When out of money, you can attempt to sleep at someone's house or just on a mattress outside.
There are various objects to collect and items can be bought or sold at shops.
There is a main narrative to the follow, but the game often offers different ways to approach it.
Eventually various endings can be reached, and there are also many premature endings after specific choices.
In those cases it is always possible to continue from a save point.
As with many RPG Maker games the character can be moved around and a single key is used to interact.
Dialogues often have multiple choices.
There is no voice-acting, but portraits of characters are shown through the conversations.
There are some adult scenes and the game's product description carries that warning that it has content dealing with racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, mental health, sexual assault, child abuse, animal abuse, drug abuse, and suicide.
About PlayStation 4
The PlayStation 4 (2013) cemented Sony's dominance of the eighth console generation, with a library exceeding 30,000 titles once indie and digital-only releases are counted. Most PS4 games remain affordable for collectors, but limited physical print runs — particularly from smaller publishers and later in the console's life cycle — are starting to see steady price increases as digital storefronts eventually wind down support.
Gamevaro tracks Always Sometimes Monsters for PlayStation 4 with separate market values for loose, complete-in-box (CIB) and factory-sealed copies, sourced from real eBay sales. Prices also vary by region — PAL, NTSC-U and NTSC-J releases of the same game often sell for different amounts due to print run sizes and regional collector demand.
Adding Always Sometimes Monsters to a Gamevaro collection takes seconds — search by title or scan the box barcode, and the app fills in cover art, release details and current pricing automatically. This PS4 release dates back to 2014.

Market insights
Rarity & condition
Always Sometimes Monsters has a steady sales history on the tracked marketplaces, meaning enough copies circulate to establish a reliable market price.
Complete-in-box (CIB) copies typically command a premium over loose cartridges/discs because the original box and manual are more fragile and get discarded or damaged over time — fewer complete sets survive.
