The levels are inspired by the original game, specifically the expanded Sharp X68000 port that featured new bosses and altered level designs, but it features brand-new gameplay mechanics that make this a substantially different game from the original.
Unlike the original game, crystals now have two features: in addition to being collectable to gain magic power, players can shoot through them to refract their shot and change its direction.
This can allow the player to target sections of the screen they couldn't reach before.
Also new is a fever mode, letting the player build up a powerful score multiplier.
In addition to the remake, it includes a direct port of the X68000 Cotton with a brand-new official translation.
